Moving shots?

[edit]

How should I geocode videos where the camera and/or subject moves during recording? Such media has a dimension of time and therefore there's more than one location associated. Do I geocode the location of recording start, or do I make the geocode imprecise enough to cover the entire recording area? Rose Abrams (talk) 14:04, 14 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

OpenStreetMap has data items describing linear things like roads and rivers but I'm pretty sure we have nothing like that. So yes, either one or the other of those, and maybe an Object Location template for an interesting landmark along the way, seems to be the choice. When it comes to categories, one could add a category about the overall area as well as specific notable spots that the video displays well/extensively and if it exists a category for the route if the route is for example a railway. I have no experience adding this template to files but it would be useful if one could specify start point and end point separately as well as any intermediate notable points where one could specify what those points are (could be notable spots or notable in the context of the video such as the next place filmed). I see. Perhaps we should tag these files with something to ensure it comes across to both humans and machines that the location varies, named something like {{Location variable}} or such. Rose Abrams (talk) 07:13, 22 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
I've made a proposal of how this could look like at {{Location variable/sandbox}}. Rose Abrams (talk) 07:24, 22 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Maybe put it on Commons:Village pump/Proposals or another place will people will come across the discussion. Prototyperspective (talk) 14:40, 23 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
