Infringement of sculptural copyright. There is no Freedom of Panorama in the Philippines. This undated (but likely post-1970s) monument was authored by sculptor Cesar Gumba. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contributions) 03:01, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
Added
Info Cesar Gumba is apparently still alive, at least as of 2025, which makes this monument a likely post-1970s creation and still under his copyright. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contributions) 03:08, 6 July 2025 (UTC)

This AI image is used in a lot of wiki pages of German Philosopher Max Stirner, but doesn't represent him adequately NomadeSpontex (talk) 10:33, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, it needs to be removed. Even on Stirner's French page, this photo is present with the mention "Max Stirner sketches by Friedrich Engels", when this obviously refers to the sketch that was on the previous page, and which is still visible on the English page btw. EtimmT (talk) 11:37, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- While, yes, this is misleading, but shouldn't it be better to remove the image from all Wiki articles and not delete it? Crispybeatle (talk) 16:13, 6 July 2025 (UTC)

This file was initially tagged by Belbury as Copyvio (copyvio) and the most recent rationale was: Explicitly asking an AI to "Create a similar picture without any copyright violation" of a specific copyrighted source image is still a copyright violation (COM:DERIV)
Converted to regular DR to allow for discussion due to the fundamental significance of this rationale. -- Túrelio (talk) 11:00, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
Delete for explicitly being a COM:DERIV based on a single input reference image. That the AI was asked to create it "without any copyright violation" doesn't mean that it understood what that was asking, or that it managed to do so.- Also flagging File:Dippel als Alchemist.jpg for discussion - it has an unrelated prompt of
Take the File:PPN663959063 Christianus Democritus.jpg and draw Dippel as an alchemist in his workshop in the style of a horror comic
but somehow has the same pose, props, costume and "a notorious alchemist sought the secret of eternal life" caption as the file listed above, perhaps because it was generated as part of the same AI conversation. Belbury (talk) 12:16, 7 July 2025 (UTC)- This addresses the copyright status of two images depicting the historical figure Johann Konrad Dippel, a German alchemist often associated with the search for immortality.
- The original image is a traditional comic book illustration, originating from a vintage, copyright-protected publication. It portrays Dippel in a cluttered laboratory, dramatically mixing chemicals over bubbling beakers. The style is consistent with American superhero comics of the 1970s or 1980s—featuring thick inking, vivid colors, dynamic postures, and a narrative caption.
- The new picture „File:Dippel als Alchemist“ by contrast, is a newly generated drawing created using DALL·E (OpenAI’s image generation model). It was produced based on the prompt:
- “Draw Dippel as an alchemist in his workshop in the style of a horror comic,”
- and used a public domain portrait of Dippel as visual reference. The resulting image shows a dramatically lit, etching-style depiction of Dippel holding a flask over a flaming cauldron in a sparse, almost medieval laboratory.
- From a copyright law perspective—especially under U.S., German, and international standards (Berne Convention)—there is a critical distinction between an idea and its expression.
- The general idea of “a historical alchemist working in a lab, seeking eternal life” is not protected by copyright. What copyright law protects is a particular expression of that idea: the specific drawing style, arrangement of elements, poses, and execution.
- The new image does not copy the protected expression of the comic. It differs in all key aspects:
- • Artistic style (vintage horror comic vs. superhero comic),
- • Color palette (earth tones and chiaroscuro vs. bright saturated colors),
- • Composition and atmosphere,
- • Poses, gestures, and narrative framing.
- There is no substantial similarity in the protectable elements. The new image was not derived from the earlier comic panel, and does not recreate any visual details of the original. Fifat (talk) 00:14, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- Fifat, thanks for disclosing the prompt.--Túrelio (talk) 07:02, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- You say the second image "used a public domain portrait of Dippel as visual reference" and you only asked it to draw a horror comic, but it is clearly still also using the same Marvel comic panel for reference. It has the same pose, clothing, props (minus the clamp and skeleton), rafters background and "notorious alchemist" comic caption, which don't appear in the public domain portrait.
- I think the chatbot has implicitly assumed that you still want it to generate a copyright-free version of the copyrighted Marvel panel that you mentioned earlier in the same conversation. Belbury (talk) 09:58, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
Keep Not similar enough, and not a copyrighted character. Cambalachero (talk) 13:59, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
Delete File:Konrad Dippel as inspiration for Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.jpg. This image is very clearly derivative of the Marvel depiction of Dippel - not only is the image stylistically similar, but it mimics the Marvel composition quite closely - Dippel has grey wavy hair, some sort of white cloth at his neck, and a yellow coat; there is a skeleton to the left of him, and a blueish metal ring stand at the right; there is a sequence of pink, red, and yellow flasks at the bottom ofthe image. All of these are creative choices which were made by the Marvel artist which the image model has slavishly copied; the instruction to "avoid any copyright infringement" has clearly fallen on deaf (metal) ears.
Delete File:Dippel als Alchemist.jpg as well. Here the similarity to the Marvel comic is weaker, but it's still there; Dippel is still in essentially the same pose (looking to the right, holding a flask in his left hand over a chemical apparatus) and is clothed similarly (his coat has changed from yellow to a dark color, but his attire is otherwise similar). And a general
Comment: The overall notion of representing Dippel as a comic book character is not copyrightable, but these images are all drawing inspiration from the Marvel strip you provided as reference, whether you specified that in the specific request or not. To break that connection, you need to start a new session with your AI model in which you do not mention the original strip or Marvel Comics at all. Instructing the AI model to "create a picture [...] without any copyright violation" is not effective; any information you have provided to the model will affect its output in ways which may infringe on copyright. Omphalographer (talk) 16:47, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
Delete: we'd consider that a derivative work if done by a human; being done by an AI doesn't change that. - Jmabel ! talk 20:14, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
Delete Regardless of the copyright status, these images are unused, have no educational value, and are actively misleading. We have actual engravings of Dippel to use. Throw File:Dippel versucht seine Frau wieder zum Leben zu erwecken.jpg in there too. Apocheir (talk) 22:40, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- Agree, the file is out of scope. Riad Salih (talk) 22:59, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- There are definitely ongoing echoes of the original image in that new version, with Dippel still holding a flask of yellow liquid above the yellow flames/smoke of a cauldron on a wooden bench, and still wearing the same clothes. If I give DALL-E the same text prompt, I get back a dark-haired man in a dark jacket crouched over a pentagram on the floor, with a speech bubble. Belbury (talk) 08:14, 11 July 2025 (UTC)

[edit]This file was initially tagged by Denniss as Copyvio (copyvio) and the most recent rationale was: taken from unknown website with unknown author. Changing to normal deletion request, because this is a old picture. The uploader should provide a link to their source. A quick web search revealed no possible authorship. It could be kept by changing the license to {{PD-anon}} and {{PD-EU-no author disclosure}}. זיו「Ziv」 • For love letters and other notes 04:29, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- Image may be old but its not old enough that the creator may be dead for 70+ years. Using the suggested "license" tags requires the uploader to make a reasonable search for an author. Uploader is not know for this as he previously uploaded several other images of the depicted person from third parties and had them deleted. COM:PCP applies here. --Denniss (talk) 09:52, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- "The copyright of this image has expired in the European Union because it was published more than 70 years ago without a public claim of authorship (anonymous or pseudonymous), and no subsequent claim of authorship was made in the 70 years following its first publication.
- To use this template, the image must meet both of the following two conditions:
- 1. Published over 70 years ago, and
- 2. The original author's actual identity was not publicly disclosed in connection with this image within 70 years following its publication."
- "Using the suggested "license" tags requires the uploader to make a reasonable search for an author."
- Yes, a thorough search was done for authors and there was no official publication that produced this image in books or media.

Unused fictitious flag; out of COM:SCOPE as not realistically useful for an educational purpose. Keφr (keep talk here) 16:34, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
- Kephir is just now coming off a three-month ban, which was due to his complete and utter unwillingness or inability to modify his behavior in any way in response to the various issues, objections, and concerns that were raised by others -- instead always going full-speed ahead doing yet again exactly and precisely what many had objected to so often. (He received plenty of notice -- the three-month ban was preceded by a one-week ban, and voluminous discussion on the Commons "User problems" noticeboard, leaving aside his user talk page.) I think that in light of all the past history, this current action by User:Kephir doesn't show any degree of "good faith" on his part, and I would strongly recommend that at an absolute minimum, User:Kephir be topic-banned from the "special or fictional flags" area until there's some evidence that he is able to work with others on Commons without stirring up unnecessary friction and turbulence (as opposed to refusing to modify his behavior in the slightest degree, which would seem to betray a certain spiteful and malicious motivation at this point). out of scope: personal fiction (flag/logo/map of a micronation) - this is a fanfiction extension of Molossia lore: the flag of a supposed (non-existent) rival neighbor nation that declared war against the Molossians. Delete per nom. From https://oneshiponefight.com/Resources/Awards (specifically, this is the "Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Naval Sea Cadet Medal" ribbon pictured on the right side of this picture). Now, that site's footer states "Copyright © 2025. All rights reserved." A real US Navy or Coast Guard site would not say that. oneshiponefight.com is not registered to the US Navy or the US Coast Guard, and does not use the .mil TLD. I can't get https://oneshiponefight.com/Contact to respond due to "504 Gateway Time-out", but it was archived to http://web.archive.org/web/20250423162700/https://oneshiponefight.com/Contact back in April, showing no actual contact info. Keep on the first two. There were Wikipedia diffs mentioned in academic papers. Those academic papers along with those diffs are mentioned in a Wikipedia article. Someone screenshotted the diffs and uploaded them to Commons. Seems straightforward COM:SCOPE to me. Even if they're removed from the article, it seems like a fine thing to do to illustrate diffs from papers about Wikipedia. I also don't see anything being called "antisemitic" on the file pages, but if I've missed something anyone can just go edit the captions/descriptions. It looks like there's something else going on with the other uploader, though, from looking at that other DR. Looks like those diffs have nothing to do with any paper, and are just one Wikipedian upset at a diff, so screenshotting it, framing it as "antisemitic" (in the case of the other DR) or "tendentious" (in the case of the third nom here). That they were blocked for harassment makes me think we should
Delete the third and the one from the other nomination. I'm not involved in the underlying dispute, so it's possible I have something wrong here. — Rhododendrites talk | 13:36, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Rhododendrites The first two were added to:
- and en:Antisemitism on Wikipedia which is a massive BLP violation. They serve no purpose other than to falsely accuse Wikipedians. Polygnotus (talk) 17:51, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- But that doesn't reply to what I said? Those are diffs not pulled out of thin air to attack someone but diffs described in academic papers about Wikipedia, extracted -- it seems to me -- to illustrate those diffs on Wikipedia. That's a long way from "falsely accusing Wikipedians" except insofar as you want to challenge those journal articles. The descriptions/captions do not appear to name anyone or call anything antisemitic. — Rhododendrites talk | 18:48, 6 July 2025 (UTC)

If I'm wrong -- if ProfGray's uploads are not just screenshots of edits that are mentioned by academic papers and referenced in the enwiki article, please correct me. That's the SCOPE argument satisfied to me. If those two images are part of a harassment campaign sufficient to get over the SCOPE arguments, that's something that needs to be articulated very clearly, and isn't usually something we deal with at DR (as opposed to e.g. ANU). — Rhododendrites talk | 22:49, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Rhododendrites If you clicked the links and read the text, then you know they are "not just screenshots of edits that are mentioned by academic papers".

Again, if you clicked the links and read the text you already knew that. Especially in this context. - And since the first 2 screenshots are unused and cannot be used, there is no reason to !vote against deletion except contrarianism. Polygnotus (talk) 22:54, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- That diff is about the academic paper itself... an academic paper in JITP, which is a well respected peer-reviewed journal. I'm not getting involved in whether it should be cited in the article, but that an edit is mentioned in a high-quality journal which at least for the time being is mentioned in a Wikipedia article, satisfies COM:SCOPE as far as I'm concerned. Beyond that, the burden would be on you to show there is another solid reason to delete (i.e. that it is part of a harassment campaign). You have not adequately made your case that these two (those uploaded by ProfGray -- I'm satisfied that the one's uploaded by Steven1991 are problematic, as I said here and in the other DR) are part of a harassment campaign, but rather gestured to multiple walls of text and act as though it should be self-evident, blaming me for not combing through them to make sense of your own argument. After being pinged to the enwiki discussion and seeing your comments here, I am not interested to engage in this battleground further. — Rhododendrites talk | 23:13, 6 July 2025 (UTC)

- How were the first two used as personal attacks? Is the argument that if material in a peer-reviewed journal article cited in an article about [criticism of] Wikipedia casts Wikipedia editors in a negative light, including it (or illustrating it) is a personal attack? If so, that's a pretty tricky argument and I'd like to see it hashed out in general terms on enwiki. I mean, we're not talking about some Breitbart or 4chan nonsense, but Holocaust Studies and the Journal of Information Technology and Politics. HS is not my area at all, but I get the sense it's pretty reputable. JITP is an area I'm familiar with, and it's reputable (though I'll admit I have no idea if it had the same reputation in 2010). I understand that some folks are challenging the source's use on the basis of the authors, and I'm not trying to weigh in on that -- I'm just making the point that those journals don't feel like good cases for saying inclusion of material in citations is a violation of behavioral policies. I appreciate folks may disagree on that point. As before, if I'm missing a smoking gun that makes it obvious ProfGray meant to use these as a personal attack, I hope someone will link to it. — Rhododendrites talk | 03:48, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Rhododendrites: I consider this addition of the image to be a personal attack. The caption is a significant misrepresentation of the actual edit, and it is in Wikipedia voice without any in-text attribution of the claim. Just because something appeared in a journal (and this image itself did not, only a link to the diff) does not mean it is above reproach, nor is it guaranteed to be in scope. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 04:45, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the link. Is it the specific language of the caption that you're saying is the personal attack, or including the image at all? If the former, it seems like an effort to summarize the journal article (which has three paragraphs on that user/subject). Is it the link to the diff perhaps? If it's the image itself, I don't see how that could be any more of a personal attack than citing the source, which after all is much more critical of the user -- it has a whole three-paragraph section about the user -- and it's the blurriness between those two things that makes me uneasy to call it a personal attack. Again, not weighing in on whether it's helpful in an article, just whether illustrating a diff already described in the Wikipedia article based on a citation to a journal article, is inherently a personal attack. — Rhododendrites talk | 13:36, 7 July 2025 (UTC)

Keep Per Rhododendrites. --RAN (talk) 18:17, 6 July 2025 (UTC)- Comment. The first two images were uploaded by me. They serve to illustrate (or display) evidence that is (or was) mentioned in the article as cited by scholars who have studied methods of anti-Jewish bias on Wikipedia. Thus, it is evidence cited in reliable sources.
- Note: Are you concerned that the images themselves are "accusations of antisemitism" -- I ask because that is not how they are presented by scholars IIRC -- and in what sense are they false? Do they mischaracterize the scholarship, or are you concerned that the scholarship is false?
- The third image is not by me. It looks like a screenshot of a recent, perhaps ongoing Wikipedia editing dispute. The screenshot does not represent evidence from any reliable secondary source.
- I'm inclined to agree with @Rhododendrites Keep above, though I'd like to better understand the alleged policy violation, for the first two images. Which aspect of WP:BLP or other deletion policy is at stake, with the first two images? Thanks. ProfGray (talk) 20:45, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- @ProfGray You very much understand the policy violation, and it is disappointing that you act like this.
- You added the first to images to the article en:Antisemitism on Wikipedia which means you falsely accused people of antisemitism without a reliable source (as you say, the place where you got the images from do not present them that way).
- Rhododendrites does not understand the context, but you clearly do or should.
- You wrote
Thus, it is evidence cited in reliable sources.
and then you immediately contradict yourself by saying:Are you concerned that the images themselves are "accusations of antisemitism" -- I ask because that is not how they are presented by scholars IIRC
If the scholars did not present those images as proof of antisemitism, then how can it be evidence of antisemitism cited in a reliable source (not plural)? - @GreenLipstickLesbian, Zero0000, LilianaUwU, and Insanityclown1: Polygnotus (talk) 22:25, 6 July 2025 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Polygnotus (talk • contribs) 22:36, 6 July 2025 (UTC)

Speedy delete The Oboler paper (full text) that discusses the edits in the first two images was written by three authors associated with the right-wing NGO Monitor (former fellow, president, former intern). Given the association of its authors, I would not consider them to be a useful source about editorial bias. If for some reason there is a need to show screenshots of specific diffs to illustrate the Wikipedia article, we should not be using an obviously biased paper to choose those diffs, and there is no need to have screenshots of these diffs on Commons. Just being mentioned in a paper does not put them in scope.
- The authors do not mention that the diff in File:Editing out the anti-Jewish critique of an NGO per Oboler et al 2010.png adds a mention of NGO Monitor as the originator of a claim, which I find particularly dishonest. The description for this image uncritically repeats the claim from the paper, and was used in enwiki for the same purpose. It's clear that the uploader intended these to push a POV, and possibly attack the editor who made the diffs, rather than as a neutral illustration of the claims made in the paper.
- The screenshot uploaded by Steven1991 was for harassment and has zero value. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:32, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- As I said on AN...
Speedy delete and OS them. It's insane that someone thought this was anything but an horrible idea. LilianaUwU (talk / contribs) 01:05, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
Delete I have a feeling that the underlying purpose of these files is to publicly humiliate and encourage harassment on the involved contributors, I don't see why someone would upload this to Commons when an edit log is available on enwiki and simple. Sev6nWiki (talk) 10:04, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
Delete Indeed, I noticed that the diff #2 added attribution of the claim (while defanging it). It's not clear why we would waste space with visual representations of information that can be linked to just as efficiently (except that adding it to commons allows for the addition of a filename orienting the viewer's experience of the diff). I was unaware that the academic article was also associated with the same NGO. As for the first image, I don't see the point in preserving and further spreading such nonsense from 12 years ago... SashiRolls (talk) 01:09, 7 July 2025 (UTC)- Delete, clear abuse of Commons to further accusations and debates on other wikis. The text shown in the first one is without doubt objectionable, but if it is relevant to an article it can be quoted with context. The uploader of the third one has been indeffed on en.wiki. Zero0000 (talk) 05:10, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
Keep as per Rhododendrites (and potentially delete the third one that may not be sourced adequately to the article) Andre🚐 02:38, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
Delete Pi.1415926535 elucidates my thinking here. The 'academic sourcing' here doesn't pass general reliability, and this is clearly an attempt to defame editors contrary to Wikimedia norms (we can't control the standards of other publications, we can absolutely control how we express them here.) David Fuchs (talk) 17:48, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- As someone who doesn't appear to be already involved in the underlying dispute and someone whose judgment I think is good in general, I'm curious what you're seeing that backs up
clearly an attempt to defame
? When this popped up on COM:AN, I looked and saw two double-blind peer reviewed journal articles published in reputable journals (not the sort I'd put scare quotes around), which were -- and still appear to be -- cited in a Wikipedia article about Wikipedia, explicitly mentioning diffs that are likewise mentioned in the Wikipedia article, and someone creating an image based on that diff for display in that Wikipedia article. Unlike the files uploaded by Steven1991, there doesn't appear to be name-calling or spin put on the description, beyond how they were described in the journal articles. If the authorship of the articles makes them unfit for inclusion in the article (something which, based on their persistence in the article, I presume has not been sorted out yet), then there's room to disagree on COM:SCOPE grounds, and I won't lose sleep over a SCOPE-based deletion here. But in either case I'm really struggling to see how material from a cited journal article could possibly be NPA territory, nevermind defamation. I appreciate that the relationship between external sources and Wikipedia editors is complicated, and that there are powerful people actively trying to censor or chill speech by harassing/threatening our editors, but just lifting something from a journal article? Thanks. — Rhododendrites talk | 18:32, 7 July 2025 (UTC)- I agree with Pi that the papers' authors are clearly not unbiased sources. That's fine in the context of cultivating neutral POV and due weight in an article (I don't see anyone arguing they should be called out-and-out unreliable and removed), but it's unacceptable to use their illustrations to essentially argue their POV is the correct one. Beyond that it's also a simple editorial point—why are these edits being illustrated versus using summary style? Quotes should always be minimal. The pattern of intent is clear and at odds with our NPOV and harassment policies across WMF projects. The project loses nothing losing these images. David Fuchs (talk) 12:50, 8 July 2025 (UTC)

Keep #1 and #2,
Delete #3. #1 and #2 are in-scope as long as they are being used, and whether they are being used appropriately is not an editorial decision that Commons should make for Enwiki; I agree with Rhododendrites that this is not an obvious case. We can return to deleting these if consensus develops over there to exclude these images. #3 is obviously just being used for harassment, and the uploader ought to be banned here and globally blocked for cross-wiki harassment. —Compassionate727 (T·C) 23:31, 7 July 2025 (UTC)

We can disagree about policies, including extremely important policies like BLP and NPA, without resorting to incivility and personal attacks of our own. Please bear that in mind. - @Compassionate727 That is not very compassionate of you. If you understood the situation, you would scold Rhododendrites. But you'll probably find the suggestion that there are things you do not understand "impolite" again, although it is a neutral observation of a fact. Polygnotus (talk) 08:19, 8 July 2025 (UTC)

- @Compassionate727 They are not appropriate for en:Antisemitism on Wikipedia, because as the uploader ProfGray said themselves in a comment above:
Are you concerned that the images themselves are "accusations of antisemitism" -- I ask because that is not how they are presented by scholars IIRC
(emphasis added by me). This sounds like using them to illustrate antisemitism would either fall under en:Wikipedia:Original research or en:WP:SYNTH. Nakonana (talk) 08:22, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- It is not. There is no article on Wikipedia on which these images are appropriate. Polygnotus (talk) 02:09, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
- Well, they were being used at en:Antisemitism on Wikipedia. I think discussion at en:Talk:Antisemitism on Wikipedia over whether they are appropriate is still ongoing. —Compassionate727 (T·C) 01:40, 8 July 2025 (UTC)

- These categorizations uploaded by @Steven1991 are quite odd, file #3 has the categories: Racism, Antisemitism, Israel, History of Israel, History of the Middle East, and Judaism. Delete Thought long and hard about this. Firstly to associate an identifiable non-notable yet identifiable individual with a negative trait (antisemitism, Holocaust minimization, ect) should require incredibly strong sourcing. One case study in a reputable journal almost gets us there, but not quite. Given that the GA reviewer has a stable online identity and is trivially identifiable, I'd like multiple sources, over some period of time, discussing the Good Article review in screenshot 1 before allowing it on Commons. The Evelyn727 diff (screenshot 2) is a little different; that account has very few edits, and is essentially anonymous. However, the text they are removing in that diff is criticism given by NGO Monitor, the association that the paper's authors have connections to. As such, there's a inherent conflict of interest between the authors of the paper and NGO Monitor's work - of course the organization might have a vested interest in having their opinions spread further on Wikipedia, of course they might be annoyed if they were edited out or changed. Given that COI, I don't think we should keep that screenshot either. GreenLipstickLesbian (talk) 10:29, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
Deleted: This is going to be a bit of a longer close rationale, but I feel it necessary. At time of deletion, the two remaining files were not in use. Simple screenshots of Wikipedia edits are generally out of scope for Commons unless they illustrate a software feature or are being actively used in educational or informational content across Wikimedia projects. While the diffs may be mentioned in academic papers, the screenshots themselves are not published or referenced directly in those sources, and their presence on Commons appears unnecessary. If the intent is to illustrate the edit content, local projects such as English Wikipedia recreated these using en:Template:Text diff or link directly to diffs (or choose to host such images locally under project-specific policies). Moreover, the descriptive captions and past use in article space have raised concerns that these files may misrepresent source material or contribute to editorial disputes, particularly in BLP-sensitive areas. Commons must not be used as a platform to pursue grievances, harass individuals, or carry on off-wiki conduct disputes by proxy. Hosting files with the apparent aim of discrediting or pressuring users on another project violates the collaborative spirit of the Wikimedia movement and is inconsistent with Commons' educational mission. Some may argue that these screenshots provide historical context or documentation of a notable editing dispute, but Commons is not a repository for archiving every version of on-wiki content, particularly when the material is already preserved in the page history or accessible through permanent diff links. If the educational value lies in the substance of the edit rather than its visual form, diffs and locally rendered text diffs are more appropriate and less prone to being taken out of context or misused. Without clear integration into educational content, the retention of these screenshots becomes indistinguishable from hosting them for the sake of documentation or personal dispute tracking, which is contrary to COM:NOTHOST and COM:SCOPE. --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 21:14, 14 July 2025 (UTC)

- Why do you say it's fairly high for logos? COM:TOO Denmark only gives us one example that is a logo, that is the WWF panda but I'm not even convinced it's because of TOO reasons it's unprotected, it might be for some other reason. If you look elsewhere in the Nordics, the TOO is pretty low. Jonteemil (talk) 07:38, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, because the WWF panda is a good example to gauge the threshold in Denmark. It is listed as an example in the threshold section and what would the other reason be? Extrapolation from nation to territory makes a lot more sense than extrapolation because of other regional and cultural similarities. UK, Canada, Australia and the US have a shared language and many similar cultural elements, but their copyright norms have significantly diverged. IronGargoyle (talk) 12:19, 13 July 2025 (UTC)

I have doubts that this is the user's own work. At File:Aeromexico 737.jpg (which I tagged as lacking permission a few days ago), the source is listed as "facebook.com" and the author "Unknown author". Given the jpg file and this file are the same photo but in different formats (notice how the planes at the back are at the same positions) I don't see any reason the two files should be tagged differently, so it's likely the case both photos are sourced from Facebook because if this was the author's own work they wouldn't need to say the source is FB in the jpg file. Falsified original history map. Wikipedia should based on modern reliable academic sources. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Attribution
The user has a massive sockpuppet army creating many fake history maps by own personal fantasy, spreading them to articles by his own army, many examples for his similar activity: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Requests_for_checkuser/Case/Spiridon_Ion_Cepleanu
This map also has many historical errors: the title is 13th century = 1200s. Principality of Transylvania was 1570-1711 and not in 1200s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Transylvania_(1570–1711)
Maramaros was not part of Moldavia, and Fogaras was not part of Wallachia, even Moldavia was founded in 1346, Wallachian in 1330: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moldavia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallachia
I also do not know what does it mean "lower Hungary", there is not a such historical or administration name. I also really do not know what does it mean "subordinate entities"" a very big part of eastern area of Kingdom of Hungary. Kingdom of Croatia was in personal union (same king) not "subordinate entity" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Hungary

- Seeing now that this has been discussed before; I cannot see why "Out-of-Scope" was not a valid reason for deletion. The flag is only used in article drafts and user galleries about fake nations; and has been created for an April 1st hoax in the last decade. --Enyavar (talk) 17:09, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
Speedy keep Geography Now has 3.74 million subscribers and a Wikipedia page, the video about this has 1.6 million views REAL 💬 ⬆ 18:15, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, I've watched that video too. As a media personality, he certainly is relevant. Articles about him need to be kept. If this flag were his channel logo? Sure, keep it.
- His video about Afghanistan from the same year has almost 4 million views by now. But even so, Afghanistan's flag is independently relevant, and even has an own Wikipedia article. If he featured an alternate-history Afghanistan flag, even 10 million views would not make it relevant.
- Bandiaterra on the contrast, invented entirely by himself for April's Fools Day, and only featured in this one video with apparently no outside reception (or is there?), would not cross the Wikipedia notability threshold. Just like all the other fake nations on Category:NationStates, this is entertainment and not educational content. Best regards, --Enyavar (talk) 20:13, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- This is Commons and not Wikipedia. Files on Commons "Must be realistically useful for an educational purpose" - something doesn't need to be real for it to be educational. If something got a million views it is probably useful for an educational purpose. REAL 💬 ⬆ 23:01, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- Oh really? 3.6 Million views cannot be wrong, this is probably useful for educational purposes.
- Oh wait no. No, it's not. It's fictional entertainment stuff. --Enyavar (talk) 00:47, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- Are you seriously trying to argue Futurama would not be in scope if it was under a free license? REAL 💬 ⬆ 01:44, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- I am seriously trying to say that "millions of people have seen a fake documentary" is not a reason to keep its fake symbols. We keep toaster diagrams that only ever had a hundred viewers, because these diagrams are educational. Fake flags are not.
- Only now do I realize that there are more of them in the "GeographyNow!" category. Three of them (of fake-countries Sovonthak, ULULIONA-LINULU and LIMBERWISK) are falsely sourced with the exact same Bandiaterra video; the Fake country of Amberdash is sourced with its own video; Qitzikwaka and Volanka are fully unsourced. I suspect that there are more floating on Commons that nobody even connected with his category.
- But why are we hosting fantasy flags that were used as visual aids in April Fool's jokes? They are fake symbols of fake countries that only serve as inside jokes. They make their creator look like someone who exclusively peddles fake-news. There is simply no realistic educational purpose. Another point is that at least the four flags with more than just abstract geometric shapes are also under his copyright (unless you tell me he released them under CC license). --Enyavar (talk) 12:17, 7 July 2025 (UTC)

Keep. Used in enough good-faith drafts that this seems to be in scope. IronGargoyle (talk) 13:23, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- Personal user galleries and drafts that won't be published? Those don't really count. Please compare Commons:Deletion requests/File:Vistulia location map.svg. --Enyavar (talk) 11:43, 12 July 2025 (UTC)
- If it was just one user who was doing this, then I would agree with you, but it seems to have independent good-faith usage across multiple projects and by multiple editors. The comparative example you give seems to be one person's pet project. IronGargoyle (talk) 12:30, 12 July 2025 (UTC)
- I really don't understand that logic. Wikipedians constantly copy each other's stuff for translations, and that is apparently also the case here. Furthermore, none of the drafts require entries to be flagged.
- If you check the one (!!) draft and the two personal user page projects, you will see that
the draft in en-WP is a 2023 offshoot from en:List of fictional countries set on Earth which itself got sanitized in 2025. The draft still includes 56 locations from GRR Martin's Ice+Fire saga, totally contrary to the list definition that says all entries needed to be located on the surface of Earth, and need not to be (fictional) states. Weirdly enough, Bandiaterra is the only GN! fictional state included, despite GN! producing a similar prank each year. But anyway: Only a few of the entries between A and B are flagged, while the whole rest is not: flags are optional for that list. In my eyes, that whole project is a huge ill-advised mess anyway. - The user page in de-WP is a flat-out copy of a 2022 version of the same original en-WP list. Gripweed attempted to translate it and stopped after letter D. It's not an independent project; and I would doubt it would be allowed into de-WP without the same sanitation that also cleared up the English original.
- --> Both of these lists above have Bandiaterra included because of this entry
- The user page in es-WP seems superficially to be an independent project from the two above, but also includes a whole lot of bogus entries that the other two did not allow. No sources needed, let alone notablity. Dozens of flags linked there have already been removed from Commons. Even so, only entries marked in green and blue were apparently taken seriously by Aitorembe. Bandiaterra is an uncolored red-link-entry without any description... actually like most in the list.
- Oh, and the Commons flag list falsely claimed it to be a micronation (instead of a fictional one). Well that is false so I removed the entry now. --Enyavar (talk) 23:47, 12 July 2025 (UTC)

According to the uploader's own description, this is an original work with no reliable sources. The book mentioned is a large, very old Arabic book that isn’t focused on the Rustamids, and the contributor doesn’t specify a page number; he simply mentions it to mislead the reader. The contributor is also blocked on enwiki. As per COM:EDUSE guidelines, this content is irrelevant and lacks educational value. Riad Salih (talk) 17:06, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- Similar to many maps of the Category:Maps of the Rustamid dynasty (and the similar history maps): unreliable content. This file is claimed to have been created in 1987 (dubious) and doesn't show any of the other regional powers which makes it highly suspect. Sadly, many similarly suspect files are currently in use in many projects: Editors first need to switch them against more reliable maps, before we can delete them.
- But at least add the following maps:
- File:La carte du royaume Rostémides - خريطة الدولة الرستمية - Map of Rustamid kingdom.png - unsourced, unused
- File:Rostémides.png - unsourced, unused
- File:Projet 17 1.png - unsourced, unused

JT TuckerOutLymphomaNight 25APR2015.png is acknowledged as a screenshot in the description, with no evidence that the actual copyright holder licensed it under CC and GFDL. Southeast Corner of North Massapequa located in Massapequa School District.png is not the uploader's CC-licensed own work. I'm on the fence about it, though, as it came from a .gov website with credits to OSM and a bunch of U.S. government agencies. 1983-plainedge-high-school-yearbook-v0-yy8ijrjcsred1.webp could quite possibly be a {{PD-US-1978-89}} case, but it's definitely not the uploader's CC-licensed own work.-- RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 18:49, 6 July 2025 (UTC)

Copyright murkiness. Bdwagner uploaded these, claiming that they were Bdwagner's "own work", for use in en:Draft:Arthur F. Barbezat -- where they're presented as the work of Barbezat, who's described as having died in 1977. The long-dead don't upload files. Something is wrong. Incidentally, Bdwagner also uploaded three photographs (also described as Bdwagner's "own work") showing Barbezat but dated as long ago as 1938: that all three are the work of somebody uploading files to Commons beggars belief.

But even if that photo representation is considered to be striking enough to exclude it, I can blur it or cut it out from the photo. Darwin Ahoy! 11:05, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- I suggest blurring the photo of the model. Agree with nomination that the photo of the model is DW, but that without it the rest of the visible ad is unproblematic simple text. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 19:40, 16 July 2025 (UTC)

Too complex for {{PD-simple}}. Needs another free license or to be deleted. Jonteemil (talk) 00:32, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- This image is less complex than some of the examples on COM:TOO US. It seems to qualify for {{PD-simple}}. ⇒ Aerrapc they/them, 02:31, 9 July 2025 (UTC)
- The middle part is quite complex IMO. Jonteemil (talk) 10:56, 9 July 2025 (UTC)
- I think this logo is more complex than for example w:File:American Airlines logo 2013.svg, File:2011 Disney Junior logo.png, File:PBS logo 2019.svg which all are examples at COM:TOO US. Jonteemil (talk) 21:22, 13 July 2025 (UTC)

Comment. Where do you get the 1987 year from? That statue looks like it has a lot of wear and tear. IronGargoyle (talk) 15:58, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
- @IronGargoyle based on the Facebook post that I provided as a link in the artist's name above. The statue is not old, since its sculptor is still alive: as seen here, he is still active, and he was slated to appear in a local documentary work of "Savage Mind Bookshop" last year (2024). It is highly improbable that a Filipino sculptor of pre-1970 Filipino sculptures are still alive today, given that the latest and authoritative life expectancy figures for Filipino males (from WHO, 2021) was 63.4 years. The monument, being subject to wear and tear, is a normal occurrence due to the corrosive tropical climate here, and perhaps the lack of proper maintenance from the city government or whoever is tasked to properly maintain the artwork. - Thank you for the clarification.
- I am the photographer who took the original image, and I hold the copyright to it. The version with the logo was created at the subject’s request, but this does not affect my ownership of the underlying photograph.
- Since there were concerns about the logo, I have already uploaded a version without it to Commons. That version should avoid any additional design element issues while still meeting the licensing requirements.
- To further confirm, I am happy to send the file and a copyright release statement to the Permissions Verification team at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org so that the record is clear. Tatelite (talk) 18:07, 13 August 2025 (UTC)

Keep. Notable subject competing in public in a notable pageant. I do not see any potential valid rationale for deletion here. IronGargoyle (talk) 12:33, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
- @IronGargoyle: It is a courtesy deletion, which I believe lies on the discretion of the deleting admin and is a valid deletion rationale by itself, although it is not sufficient that the person simply dislikes the photo (Commons:Photographs of identifiable people).
- The policy allows for deletions from the subject with good reasons (not too sure what this means), which is subject to discretion of sympathetic deletion by administrators. I just wanted to add additional context (this is public information posted by the verified account, NOT VRT info): the subject claims that this is an old photo they do not want to be associated with, and claims it is not representative of their current occupation and would like it's removal ([8])
- I have no personal opinion on keeping/deletion, however, but would like to leave further context for administrators. Thank you. Takipoint123 (💬) 22:48, 14 July 2025 (UTC)

Is a current copyrighted TM image for AFC Ajax and because it is the logo of the football club in current use there for it can not be on the free domain. Govvy (talk) 17:12, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- It can certainly be in the public domain and trademarked at the same time. But I would check first that anonymous works in Netherlands come into the public domain after 70 years. Also we can try to find the original Ajax image that was used for this logo and check if there is any non-trivial contribution. — putnik 14:22, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Putnik: Per disclaimer All rights to any material on 'The Official Ajax Website' (all pages under the domain www.ajax.nl), including copyright, remain with AFC Ajax NV. All rights to club names and logos remain with their respective owners. It says copyright remains with AFC Ajax NV and given that the logo is copyrighted it can't be on wiki-commons for that reason. I have uploaded a slightly older version years ago to wikipedia, however you simply can't have this logo on wiki commons. Govvy (talk) 15:10, 8 July 2025 (UTC)

- The trademark laws have nothing in common with the copyright laws. Let's remember SONY trademark, for example. On the one hand, there's nothing copyrightable in these four letters, anyone may make copies of that word. On the other hand, noone may sell the goods marked with SONY trademark. As long as Wikimedia Commons does not sell any trademarked goods, we cannot break any trademark laws. What about Ajax warning, it looks very good, for Ajax will lose in court and will gain a very bad publicity. Do they really want to have such a bad publicity? -- PereslavlFoto (talk) 19:29, 8 July 2025 (UTC)

- Actually the trademark protection is a complete non-issue here. The only question that needs to be answered is: did the copyright expire? You may be amazed, but copyright expires separate from trademark rights. And trademark rights are not a valid reason for deletion at Wikimedia Commons, see COM:NCR. I have uploaded a slightly older version years ago to wikipedia, however you simply can't have this logo on wiki commons. Govvy (talk) 15:10, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
- It is definitely the same logo as from 1930. @Jcb: where's the evidence that this was an anonymously designed logo? Abzeronow (talk) 03:38, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
- I don't know. I have not made such a claim as far as I can see, I have not been involved in this file or this DR before today. But in this specific case it seems highly likely that the copyright was owned by the club, so I think we can safely assume that copyright expired by the end of 1998. Jcb (talk) 09:21, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
Kept: per discussion, copyright of logo expired. --Abzeronow (talk) 01:23, 28 September 2025 (UTC)
Copyvio files tagged as "own work," some are admittedly works by professional photographer Mani Golnazi, uploaded without consent. According to metadata, others are taken with a variety of cameras (Canon PowerShot SX200, Canon PowerShot SX120 I, SGH-F480, Canon PowerShot SX30 IS, SP550UZ) indicating that they are not owned by the uploader.

Keep The term for photographs in Iran is only 30 years from being made public or displayed, so 1995 is the cutoff. The USA has no copyright relationship, so they are in the public domain in the US too. If there was a smaller list of ones that are suspected of being newer than 1995, that would be helpful. --RAN (talk) 02:48, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- The date of creation differs from date of publication. These files are known to be made public on the internet in 2012 (so the 30 years span would end in 2042), there is no evidence of earlier publication. HeminKurdistan (talk) 12:37, 7 July 2025 (UTC)

- Weird, I swear I clicked the button. In any case, deleted per HeminKurdistan's last comment - without a known pre-1995 publication, we cannot assume PD status. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:01, 5 October 2025 (UTC)
